AMERICAN BOARD OF PEDIATRICS
PART 4 MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION

Boy2

Overview

The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) recognizes the efforts of board certified pediatricians who imbed quality improvement in their day-to-day practice of medicine. As part of Maintenance of Certification (MOC), quality improvement (QI) projects that meet standards set by the ABP can apply for approval by the ABP. If the QI project is approved, physician participants are eligible for credit toward maintenance of their ABP certification.

MOC consists of four primary parts:

  • Part 1: Evidence of professional standing
  • Part 2: Evidence of lifelong learning and self-assessment
  • Part 3: Evidence of cognitive expertise
  • Part 4: Evidence of satisfactory performance in practice

QuIIN and MOC Part 4

Members of the QuIIN Network will have the opportunity to meet ABP MOC Part 4 requirements when they participate in QuIIN quality improvement projects approved by the ABP to fulfill Part 4.

QuIIN follows the Standards for Quality Improvement (QI) Projects Seeking Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Approval  (www.abp.org) as the gold standard for designing and implementing selected QuIIN projects. Although not all QuIIN projects are eligible for ABP approval, the goal is for the majority of improvement projects, such as Safe and Healthy Beginnings, to meet the rigors established by the ABP.

ABP Quality Improvement Project Standards

The ABP approves established, structured, sustainable quality improvement projects that have demonstrated improvements in care and are based on accepted improvement science and methodology. The ABP standards for QI projects address:

  • Impact on 1 or more of the Institute of Medicine quality dimensions
  • Relevance to physician practice
  • Definition of project aims and completion criteria
  • Use of standard quality improvement methods
  • Project structure, including sponsoring organization, leadership, and infrastructure
  • History and results of the project or the sponsoring organization
  • Documentation of project design, processes, policies, participant activities, and results
  • HIPAA compliance

Additional Information

Additional information about ABP MOC is available on the ABP Web site at www.abp.org. Click on the Maintenance of Certification tab at the top of the page.
